Maritime Distress Signal & Silent Period_e0140365_2323282.png

1999年以来モールス信号も沈黙時間も人工衛星の発達によりEPIRB(非常用位置指示無線標識装置=Emergency Position Indicate Radio Beacon)に取って代わった。

Every morning a little before 9 o'clock, our Captain gives us an up-to-date cruising information plus an interesting sea-related story by way of broadcasting. This morning it was about "Silent Period".

In the world of ship, there had been a custom to listen with intense attention to the voice of those who were in need for help. It was "Silent Period".

Every communication room of a ship used to have a special clock showing the silent periods, that is, 3 minutes after every 0, 15, 30, and 45. During each period, all the ships at sea stopped waves except for one in distress. They used Morse code those days.

April 14, 2012 was the 100 th memorial day of the tragedy of Titanic. It was the very first ship that sent distress signal "SOS" into the air.

The Morse code and silent period clocks were replaced in 1999 by EPIRB(Emergency Position Indicate Radio Beacon) thanks to the development of the artificial satellite system. But many ships still keep the hitoric clock on their wall. So does our ship ASUKA II.
